The recent news released by Moderna and Merck regarding the personalized mRNA vaccine that slowed down melanoma progression when combined with other treatments is a positive advancement in research that offers hope.
Executive Director Deb Girard shares, “This news is especially encouraging to current melanoma patients, their families and caregivers, and melanoma survivors throughout the country.”
As the national leading non-profit dedicated to preventing melanoma, IMPACT Melanoma hosts two educational and information symposiums each year. In 2025, the fall symposium featured a leading researcher from Moderna who provided an overview of advancing research for personalized treatments and vaccines, including targeting melanoma.

Less than a year after the symposium, we are reading of promising results! Read the latest news from Moderna and Merck and its randomized Phase 3 clinical trial highlighting the advances being made to treat and slow down the advancement of melanoma.
“We continue our efforts to raise awareness of the importance of being safe in the sun, the importance of prevention including wearing sunscreen and seeking shade, while also encouraging early detection,” continues Deb Girard of IMPACT Melanoma. “There is an abundance of misinformation out there regarding sunscreen, that we work hard to address, while educating younger people of the dangers of tanning beds and tan maxxing, a dangerous phenomenon gaining attention online that glorifies tans.”
The reality is most skin damage occurs when we are young, and that damage leads to diagnoses of skin cancer. Awareness and prevention are essential so that people make informed decisions to protect their body’s largest organ. Most Americans do not realize the serious nature of melanoma, including that on average one person in the United States dies every hour from melanoma.
At IMPACT Melanoma, we applaud the researchers at Moderna and Merck for their commitment and advances. We look ahead with hope to learn more and track the clinical trial results as these individualized vaccines offer improved quality of life and improved outlooks for melanoma patients.
