For the first time in 25 years, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved a new ingredient for sunscreen in the United States. Announced on June 9, 2026, the FDA has approved the ingredient bemotrizinol (BEMT).
Bemotrizinol is a non-mineral, chemical UV filter that provides broad-spectrum protection against both UVA and UVB rays. The ingredient is described as safe for use in sunscreens by adults and children six months and older.
This ingredient has been used for decades in the European Union’s sunscreen market, as well as in Australia, Canada, and several Asian countries since the early 2000s. In the United States, sunscreen is categorized as an over-the-counter drug, whereas in other countries it is categorized as a cosmetic and is not subject to the lengthy approval process of the FDA.
The importance of sunscreen use
IMPACT Melanoma is pleased to hear of the approval of this new ingredient that appears to not be absorbed into the bloodstream and does not leave a white film as common with many mineral sunscreens. This is especially beneficial to people of color.
“The approved use of BEMT is a sign of progress in the United States. Regular use of sunscreen with SPF of 30 or higher is essential to reducing skin cancer rates, including the most dangerous form, melanoma,” explains Deb Girard, Executive Director of IMPACT Melanoma. “This ingredient is broad spectrum, blocking both harmful UVA and UVB rays which is especially important for choosing an effective sunscreen product.”
In addition to regular use of sunscreen SPF of 30 or higher, it is important also to wear a hat, sunglasses and, if possible, to avoid being outside in the heat of the day when the sun’s harmful rays are strongest. Seek shade and wear sunscreen and protective clothing.
