Encouraging Updates for Melanoma Patients and Caregivers

May 28, 2025

This recording is worth 60 minutes of your time.

Being diagnosed with melanoma is frightening. The good news is, advances in medicine and testing provide patients, families, and patient care teams, including oncologists and dermatologists, with better information and options to deliver personalized care.

This positive news was the focus of IMPACT Melanoma’s Spring Symposium.

IMPACT Melanoma’s Executive Director, Deb Girard, welcomed the audience to the virtual symposium and succinctly summarized the dramatic advances affecting a melanoma’s patient prognosis.

‘Cooler Technologies’ for Biopsies and Diagnoses

We encourage you to set aside one hour to watch this recorded symposium, especially as Dr. Aaron Farberg highlights ‘cooler technologies’ now available to identify cell irregularities and various biopsy techniques available to minimize invasion and scarring while also assisting in improved diagnoses.

He encourages all melanoma patients and caregivers to be advocates, acknowledging the challenges of navigating the complexities of our health care system and insurance. He describes the often large team of specialists involved in your care and shares how he personally is readily available to be the melanoma patient’s advocate throughout their journey as he knew the patient first and likely knows their family members, too. We encourage you to watch the recording to learn about available biopsy techniques and testing so you can advocate for yourself.

Dr. Farberg continues to speak to the relative subjectiveness of diagnosing melanoma and the testing advances now commonly used, including those developed by Castle Biosciences, which help a dermatopathologist with objective data to support a diagnosis.

Dr. Farberg speaks in an easy-to-understand manner on how cancer staging including melanoma is subjective and is not directly linked to outcomes. His shares that advances in genome testing to present doctors with an individualized report (e.g., Decision Dx Melanoma Report from Castle Biosciences) is a game changer in enabling a doctor to review an individualized report on a melanoma based on genetic testing that greatly assists in developing a treatment plan.

Plus, Prevention and Melanoma Survivorship Journey

The symposium includes Brianna Spiegel, M1, Boston University Chobanian and Avedisian School of Medicine, who presented and reinforced the importance of prevention, reiterating the importance of adopting all 4 S’s of prevention.

Mitch Hanson, M4, MD/MPH Candidate, Harrison Scholar Medical College of Georgia, spoke to the importance of survivorship and the personal process that every melanoma patient goes through as they grieve and cope, adjust to a new normal, and leverage programs available, including those from IMPACT Melanoma, to see support throughout their journey. Learn more about IMPACT’s support programs.

We are thrilled to offer the recording of our most recent symposium to those unable to attend.

Please share the link with melanoma patients, survivors, friends, family, and caregivers. Tremendous progress is being made to offer personalized care to melanoma patients.

Be sure to stay vigilant and adopt Brianna’s 4 S’s of prevention.
